How 2.5-Year-Old Remi Learned to Sleep Independently – and His Family Found Harmony Again

When Remi’s mum reached out to me, she and her husband, Erik, were facing a challenging situation. Their 2.5-year-old son, Remi, a lively and curious little boy during the day, had developed a sleep dependency that was impacting the whole family.

The Challenge: A Back-Breaking Situation

Remi’s sleep had always been a bit unsettled, but it had recently become unsustainable. Remi wouldn’t sleep through the night unless his dad, Erik, was in his room, sleeping on a floor bed.

While this had been a temporary solution, Erik had begun experiencing severe back pain, a previous injury that was being exasperated from sleeping on the floor, making it impossible to continue.

Remi would wake multiple times a night, calling out for his dad. If Erik wasn’t there, Remi would become distressed and unable to settle himself back to sleep.

This meant disrupted sleep for everyone in the house, leaving Remi’s parents exhausted and struggling to manage their daily responsibilities.

“We were at a loss,” Remi’s mum shared. “We knew Erik couldn’t keep sleeping on the floor, but we didn’t know how to help Remi sleep independently. We were worried about how it was affecting him, too. He was becoming increasingly clingy and prone to tantrums during the day.”

They had considered various approaches but felt overwhelmed and unsure where to turn.

The Turning Point: A Gentle Approach to Independence

Feeling desperate and concerned about Erik’s health, they decided to explore sleep coaching. After a thorough consultation, I created a personalised sleep plan for Remi.

This plan focused on creating a calming bedtime routine, establishing clear boundaries, and teaching Remi the skills to self-soothe and fall asleep independently in his own bed.

We also addressed the underlying reasons for his reliance on his dad’s presence.

“Harriet was so patient and understanding,” Remi’s mum recalled. “She took the time to listen to our concerns and explained the process in a way that made us feel confident and supported.”

The Results: Peaceful Nights and Positive Changes

To Remi’s parents’ delight, the changes were significant and quick.

“Within a few days, Remi was sleeping through the night in his own bed,” his mum said.

He was settling himself back to sleep if he woke briefly, and the constant calling out for Erik had stopped. It was such a relief!

Life After Sleep Coaching: A Transformation Beyond Sleep

The impact of the sleep coaching extended far beyond just improved sleep.

“As well as already meeting our goals,” Remi’s mum shared, “Erik and I were talking, and even the small tweaks you made to his evening routine have changed things more than you can imagine. Now that he’s in a better evening routine and getting more consistent full nights' sleep, he is like a different child. The whining and tantrums that were literally taking over have stopped. His mood and overall emotional state have improved unbelievably so. You have helped more than just the sleep goals we set. Maybe you’re used to hearing this, but we didn’t expect it to have such a profound effect on other aspects of life, and I wanted you to know just how much what you’re doing is helping and how much we appreciate it.”
